Thanks Tony...This is the closest view I have had of one myself. Lucky for me he fell right at my feet and I seized the moment. This particular Red Eyed Cicada variety is from the 13 year swarm this past spring. They are also the largest variety of Cicada at approx. 1-1/2 inches long.

Kelly, this is an exquisite photo! Here in the Piedmont of North Carolina I have spent many summer nights listening to the Cicada's song and smelling the frangrance of Abelia wafting through my window. I only wish I could, once again, hear the sound of the Whip-poor-will of my childhood. They have become so rare due to predation and loss of habitat. You know Kelly I've heard the Cicadas all my life but I've never seen a live one, only the exoskeleton they leave behind. Thank you for the enlightenment.

interesting shot Kelly. We have no cicadas in Western Washington but we do have some very interesting red eye flies.

They are certainly quite bold!
